When Is the Right Time for a New Air Conditioning Unit?

Buying a new air conditioning unit for your home is an expensive investment, but there are times when making that investment is the right decision for a variety of reasons.  Energy savings, reduced repair costs, tax breaks and incentives and concern for the environment are just a few of the reasons, and there are plenty more.  If your unit is several years old, it may be worthwhile to hire professional air conditioning installation.

If your aging air conditioner has fallen into disrepair, it is probably time to consider a new air conditioning installation.  Corroding coils, a leaking air-handling unit, or diminishing refrigerant levels are surefire indicators of a system that likely needs to be replaced.  Older air conditioning systems used either CFC (chlorofluorocarbon) or HCFC (hydrochlorofluorocarbon) refrigerants that have been banned from production.  If an older unit develops a leak, it cannot simply be recharged; it must be converted to a new refrigerant.  This can be very expensive and leave you with a system that will not sufficiently cool the house.

Saving on electricity cost is another excellent reason to install a new air conditioning system.  New air conditioning installations are tested and given a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating (SEER) based on their performance.  Prior to 2006, the U.S. government required a minimum SEER of 10.0.  Since that time, the minimum rating requirement was raised to 13.0.  However, most modern air conditioning systems have SEER’s in the 14.0 to 20.0 range, with some exceeding 23.0.  If your central air conditioner has a SEER of 10.0, installing a new air conditioning system with an SEER of 20.0 will cut its electricity usage in half. Not only could this save you money on your power bill to offset the new air conditioner cost, but will provide benefit to the environment as well in reduced greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel usage.

In addition to the outright reduction in electricity usage, new air conditioning installation systems have modern, digital control systems that can help you save even more money.  Most new air conditioning systems have multiple fan settings, digital thermostats, variable cooling levels and high-efficiency particle accumulators (HEPA) or electrostatic filters to remove fine particles from the air that reduce air quality and the cooling capacity of the coils.  Controlling how the system runs and keeping it clean to improve efficiency will let you pocket even more money.

Federal and state governments frequently will offer tax incentives and rebates to consumers who replace old, inefficient systems with modern, energy-efficient alternatives.  This may be the perfect reason for you to buy and install a new air conditioning system.  When you combine a tax rebate with the ongoing benefits of lower electric bills, the new system can be paid for quickly, and start paying you back instead.

Whatever your reason, there is always at least some benefit to installing a new air conditioning system to replace one that is more than a few years old, and the benefits increase as the age of the existing system increases.  Now is the time to consider the benefits of air conditioning installation.- AboutHVAC
